Before you Enroll

Finding a mentor can be a BIG commitment, please consider the following before enrolling:

  • The application process can take two to four months, and may take additional time to be matched to a mentor
  • BBBS Calgary and Area staff will work with you and your child to review your situation and determine how a mentor would be of benefit. Be prepared to openly discuss: peer relationships, school performance, living environment, parent or guardian support and adult involvement other than the parent(s) or guardian(s)

The Application and Enrolment Process

The enrolment and matching process can vary from program to program, but the following is a general overview of the process:

  • A parent, guardian, teacher or young person submits an online application
  • Applicant is contacted by BBBS Calgary and Area within 48 hours for a phone questionnaire
  • Parent/guardian and young person attend the Child/Youth Safety Training and Parent Orientation
  • Parent/guardian and young person attend an in-person interview with BBBS Calgary and Area staff
  • Parent/guardian and young person complete a liability waiver, media consent forms (if applicable), and situational assessment for mentoring needs

The Matching Process

Similar to the application and enrolment process, the matching process can vary from program to program, but in general:

  • The caseworker, now familiar with the young person discusses potential matches with family and young person
  • The caseworker arranges for a meeting between the child or youth, the volunteer mentor, and the parent or guardian
  • If everyone agrees, the match can begin!
