Empower a Young person In Your Community

Thank you for your interest in volunteering as a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters! We’re so excited to have you join our community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters serves young people from age six through young adulthood in one-to-one mentoring relationships. Mentors and mentees hang out for as little as one hour a week doing normal, everyday activities, like going for a walk, doing homework, playing games, grabbing a bite to eat, or just chatting!

It takes little to make a BIG difference in a kid’s life.

How Shared Experiences Empower Travis and Draiden

Travis and Draiden navigate the world with neuro-diversity, specifically ADHD, which forges a unique bond between them. Draiden, a whirlwind of energy and curiosity, finds in Travis a mentor who not only understands him but also mirrors his youthful spirit. Travis, having faced similar challenges in his youth, sees mentoring Draiden as a journey back to his younger self. Their relationship reminds Travis of his lively adolescent days and reconnects him with a side of himself that adulthood often sidelines.

For Travis, the essence of their bond is rooted in acceptance and empowerment. He doesn’t aim to change Draiden but to embrace and affirm who he is, equipping him with the tools to manage and celebrate his neurodivergence. This affirmation from a role model like Travis, who tells Draiden that he is perfectly okay just as he is, is incredibly empowering.

Mentor FAQ

Mentoring is all about building a genuine, one-on-one relationship with a young person, where you get to show up as a positive role model. It’s about being there for them, having fun, and offering encouragement and guidance. It could be as simple as going for a walk, doing homework together, or chatting about life. The goal is to help them feel seen, heard, and supported as they navigate their world.
