Legacy Giving
Donating Publicly Traded Shares, Bonds, or Mutual Funds
Donating publicly traded securities to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area is a powerful way to make a significant impact on local children's lives. Your generous gift of securities, which can include stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, is not subject to capital gains tax when donated directly to a charity. In addition to providing tax benefits, your gift of securities will help children, young people, and families in most need of mentoring support.
Gifts Through RRSPs, RRIFs, and Other Retirement Savings
A charitable gift from your retirement savings can be made by naming Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area as a direct beneficiary. Generally, people name their surviving spouse as the beneficiary of their RRSP. However, if the beneficiary is someone other than a spouse or dependent, the value of the RRSP will be taxed as ordinary income, often at the highest marginal rate.
By designating Big Brothers Big Sisters as a beneficiary of all or a portion of your RRSP or RRIF, your tax credit will offset the tax on those distributions. This presents a great opportunity to make a significant gift to our organization while enjoying beneficial tax savings. You retain full access to the funds during your lifetime, and your donation will pass to BBBS tax-free.
Gifts of Life Insurance
A gift of life insurance can allow you to leave a significant legacy to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area at a relatively low annual cost. Life insurance proceeds are paid directly to your beneficiaries outside of your estate, meaning your gift will not be diminished by taxes or other fees.
There are three ways you can donate using life insurance:
Transfer ownership of an existing policy: You can transfer ownership of a policy to BBBS, and we will issue a charitable receipt for its cash surrender value, plus any accumulated dividends and interest. If you continue to pay premiums, you will receive charitable receipts for those payments.
Purchase a new policy: You can purchase a new policy and name BBBS Calgary as both the owner and beneficiary. You will receive charitable tax receipts for the full amount of the premiums paid year after year.
Name BBBS as a beneficiary: You can name BBBS as a beneficiary for a specific dollar amount or a percentage of a new or existing policy. In this case, your estate will receive a tax receipt for the value of the proceeds BBBS receives.
